The Broncos’ interim head coach wasn’t even on the staff when the season started

DENVER — When the 2022 season began, Jerry Rosburg was enjoying retirement after a stellar career that included making the Baltimore Ravens’ special teams the league’s best over a period of a decade.

It will end with him serving as a head coach for the first time.

Brought in after Week 2 to help now-deposed coach Nathaniel Hackett with game management following the late-game snafu at Seattle and the fans counting down the play clock in the Week 2 win over Houston, now Rosburg will guide the Broncos as interim head coach

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news.

Rosburg, 67, had been retired since after the 2019 season before the Broncos hired him to help Hackett manage game situations. And since then, the Broncos’ snafus in that regard have been few, never reaching the lows of the first two games.

The longtime coach earned a Super Bowl ring with Baltimore in 2012. He spent 19 years as a special-teams coordinator in the NFL after rising through the college ranks.

Now, Rosburg will try to guide the battered Broncos jalopy back into the garage without absorbing any further damage before an offseason of what is likely to see massive restoration work.

(Update – 2:18 p.m.) –

9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan Broncos insider Mike Klis is reporting the Broncos initially offered the interim job to defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, but he told the team no.
