David Roddy will hope the third time is the charm as he joins his third NBA team of the season on Monday, signing with the Houston Rockets on a two-way deal.
Roddy’s time in the pros thus far has been a rocky road, already playing for four different teams in less than three seasons since he was selected 23rd by Memphis in the 2022 NBA Draft. His pick was right after the Nuggets took Christian Braun and the Jazz got Walker Kessler.
The 23-year-old is a bit undersized by height, his forward spot at 6-foot-4, but his bruising 255-pound frame makes him interesting for the role. Yet his shooting of 30.5% in the pros thus far is what has held him back. Still, Roddy is scoring 6.2 points a night across 165 games, only averaging 17 minutes a contest in his career.
The 2022 Mountain West Player of the Year and honorable mention All-American from Colorado State, scored 19.2 points per game in his junior year of school. In that final season for the Rams, he led them to a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where they were upset by Michigan State in the first round.
This season, Roddy started with the Hawks but was waived after just 27 games of action. He caught on for a few games in Philadelphia but is now likely with the Rockets for the rest of the season with Tuesday’s deadline to sign two-way players. He can be converted to a full-time player between now and season’s end, but if he’s not, Roddy will not be eligible to play in the postseason—where he’s gotten some minutes each of his first two seasons in the league.
The Rockets are going to the playoffs, holding the No. 5 spot in the West, and looking to regain some position now that their starting guard Fred VanVleet returned from a month-long injury where the team went 5-7 in February. The upstart team has a lot of depth, and it’s hard to see Roddy getting real time, but this likely puts him in a better position for this offseason and the subsequent summer league, where he will try to keep his NBA dreams alive.
Former first-round pick David Roddy has agreed on a two-way NBA deal with the Houston Rockets, his agents at Wasserman told ESPN. Roddy has averaged 6.2 points and 2.9 rebounds across three NBA seasons and 165 games.
