Three-time MVP Nikola Jokic could make his return against two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo when the Denver Nuggets meet the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday. His status was upgraded in the NBA’s official injury report ahead of the contest to doubtful.
Jokic has missed five-straight games with a left ankle injury, first noticed earlier this month against the Boston Celtics, during a 110-103 Nuggets loss. Six days later he bashed his elbow during a two-game set in OKC that the Nuggets split. Six days later he bashed his elbow during a two-game set in OKC that the Nuggets split.
He’s played through the pain at times this month and has still played close to his top level, averaging 29.3 points 13.6 rebounds and 9.0 assists this month but his deep-range shooting and free throw efficiency numbers are way down over the eight games in March. On the season, Jokic was battling Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for another MVP, though that talk has died down during this run of Nuggets without their bigman. Still, Jokic ranks in the top three in the NBA for points, rebounds and assists while averaging a triple-double in what may be his finest offensive season yet.
The Nuggets began a five-game homestand without Jokic on Monday, losing 129-119 to the Chicago Bulls. Denver has nine games left this season and is 4-7 when their MVP sits.
