Report: Giants leaning to Shedeur Sanders but eyeing other QB too

Feb 24, 2025, 2:35 PM

The New York Giants will have a mostly new quarterback room come 2025 and it could feature former Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders.

A report from ESPN on Monday shared that the Giants have their sights set on Sanders, according to multiple league insiders. More surprisingly the same story shared that New York could still add at the position even if they hit on Sanders at No. 3 in the NFL Draft. The team is interested in repeating the recipe they followed the last time they took a high-profile quarterback, rookie Eli Manning in 2004. Back then they had Super Bowl-winning quarterback Kurt Warner as their starter, leaving after that season for Arizona. It worked out pretty well for the Giants, who returned to the playoffs in Manning’s sophomore season and then won a Super Bowl a few years later.

This time around the team is targeting veteran free agent Jameis Winston, who has already thrown his hat into the ring for the current gig. The former No. 1 pick shared that interest with Saquon Barkley during Super Bowl week. Giants top receiver Malik Nabers also hinted on social media that he likes the idea of the seemingly available Matthew Stafford from the Rams.

Team owner John Mara said the team is looking for its quarterback of the future, which is seemingly more in the ballpark of Sanders with a veteran backup rather than turning it over to the 37-year-old Stafford while at the same time taking on a rookie.

The Giants will meet with all of Sanders, Cam Ward, Jaxson Dart, Will Howard and Jalen Milroe in Indianapolis at the combine this week. They did the same last year when they toyed with the idea of going for Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye, before running it back with Daniel Jones.

ESPN reports that the Giants will bring in their top quarterback prospects for visits to their facility after the combine. New York’s brass is already pretty familiar with most of the players since they spent much of the fall on the road. For Sanders, Giants general manager Joe Schoen visited several Buffs games and practices, even speaking at a team event.
