Michael Porter Jr. isn’t too worried about what seed the Nuggets get in the playoffs

Apr 10, 2025, 1:04 PM

The Western Conference is utter chaos this season. With just days left in the season, the Denver Nuggets can land anywhere from the No. 3 seed all the way to the No. 8 seed when the regular season ends Sunday night. For Michael Porter Jr., he isn’t too worried about what seed the team gets as long as Denver finds themselves in the playoff picture.

“One we solidify our spot in the playoffs, it doesn’t matter the seeding, but definitely [Friday and Sunday’s matchups are] a big couple of games,” Porter said after Denver’s 124-116 win over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday.

The Nuggets have two games of the utmost importance left on the schedule. The Memphis Grizzlies come to town on Friday and then the Nuggets travel to Houston on Sunday to close the regular season against the Rockets. As it stands, if the Nuggets go 2-0, they will get the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. If they go 1-1, they can finish anywhere in the 5-7 range. An 0-2 record down the stretch drops them to the 6-8 range and almost certainly puts them in the Play-In Tournament.

Even if the Nuggets don’t win out to secure a top-four seed and home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs, Porter knows that it’s not that big of a deal. The Nuggets haven’t been themselves at Ball Arena this season, winning just 25 of the 40 games they have played at home. In 2024, the team won 33 games at home after winning 34 in 2023.

While the Mile High City hasn’t been providing the Nuggets with the same magic as years past, the team has been productive on the road. Denver’s 23 road wins this year are tied for the second-most in the Western Conference.

The Nuggets hold the tiebreaker over the Golden State Warriors as of now. Friday’s game will determine who owns the tiebreaker between Denver and Memphis, while Denver will also hold the tiebreaker over the Los Angeles Clippers because they will end the season with a better conference record than LA. The Nuggets will not hold the tiebreaker over the LA Lakers, as the Lakers will either win the Pacific Division or have a better conference record than the Nuggets.

For obvious reasons, Denver doesn’t own the tiebreaker over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Houston rested many of their key players in their recent loss to the Clippers as they have the No. 2 seed locked up. While it’s no guarantee they will do that again against Denver, it would only be a boost to the Nuggets’ chances to get home-court advantage in the first round. However, that doesn’t matter if Denver can’t get the job done against Memphis on Friday. With new interim head coach David Adelman in charge, the team looks re-energized and ready to make a push.
