The Colorado Rockies and their lost weekend lingered into Monday night, and it led them to a new franchise record: most consecutive innings without a run.
By remaining scoreless through the first four innings of their series opener at Dodger Stadium against the defending world champions, the Rockies surpassed the previous club mark of 30 consecutive innings without a run, set from Sep. 30 through Oct. 3 of 2010.
The skein reached 32 innings before mercifully ending in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Outfielder Nick Martini eked out a single to the left side of the infield, which set up Kyle Farmer — who has provided more hits to date on the road trip than the rest of the team put together — for a ground ball down the left field line.
Martini was waved around third and came home, ending the Rockies’ drought.
Two innings earlier, Martini nearly ensured that these Rockies would only match the scoreless record, as he led off the fourth inning with a double to the right-field wall.
But befitting a team that is in an offensive funk, Martini advanced no further. Kyle Farmer — who had five of the Rockies’ nine hits over the weekend series in San Diego — dribbled a harmless grounder to third for the first out.
Ryan McMahon and Michael Toglia followed Farmer to the plate and struck out, continuing another trend of the season to date: whiffing. Colorado’s parade of strikeouts continued Monday with six in the first four innings.
