Gabriel Landeskog is back with the Avalanche, returned from conditioning loan

Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog made headlines around the hockey world over the weekend during his conditioning stint the the Colorado Eagles, the AHL affiliate of the Avs up in Loveland. He played in two games over the weekend, and scored a patented tip-in goal in Saturday’s victory over the Henderson Silver Knights.

In the two games, Landeskog played just around 15 minutes per night, and added an assist along with the game-tying goal on Saturday. Playing in a back-to-back was a big step for him, and was the only game experience he got before potentially suiting up for playoff hockey, an entirely different beast.
Landeskog was allowed to play up to three games with the Eagles on his conditioning stint, but the involved parties determined it would be best to return to the Avalanche on Tuesday to begin practicing for the Dallas Stars in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs while the Eagles travel up to Ontario for a game on Wednesday night.

Landeskog still hasn’t played in an NHL game since Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final. If the captain were to return for the playoffs next week, it is unlikely that he will be playing a hefty load of minutes against one of the league’s top teams in the Dallas Stars, but rather be used in a role where head coach Jared Bednar will be able to pick and choose his spots during important times in the game when the Avs need some juice.
While the 32-year-old’s conditioning stint has ended, there has been no official word on his status for the postseason. The team has an optional practice on Tuesday afternoon as they prepare to head down to Dallas for the postseason.
