COLORADO AVALANCHE

Yes, Cale Makar’s little brother is participating at Avs development camp

Believe it or not, the Colorado Avalanche are already back on the ice.

Yes, everyone’s focused on NHL free agency and it’s not the main team, but Avs development camp has been going on all this week. The practices are taking place at Family Sports Center, where the Avalanche normally skate, and wrap up tonight with a scrimmage. The team will do one more “activities” session tomorrow in Colorado Springs.

While the players participating aren’t really household names, a couple of draft picks from this year are out there, along with former University of Minnesota star Ben Meyers.

But perhaps the biggest name on the ice boasts the last name Makar. No, not Cale, rather his little brother, Taylor. The Avalanche picked him late in the 2021 NHL Draft and he followed his older brother’s path, playing college hockey at the University of Massachusetts.

The Avalanche’s social team caught up with Taylor after practice on Thursday and asked him five quick questions. Like Cale, he doesn’t have a ton to say.

Taylor played his first year with UMass in the 2021-22 campaign, and will return to college next year. He registered just one point (a goal) in 18 games and got off 13 shots. He committed six penalties for UMass.

It’s not like expectations are super high for Taylor — he was drafted in the seventh-round and No. 220 overall by the Avs in 2021 — but it’s still a cool story. His older brother just won the Stanley Cup and the Conn Smythe trophy and Taylor was there to celebrate with Cale on the ice and in the postgame press conference.

Will Taylor make an impact for the Avs someday? Probably not. But is he working his tail off to hopefully one day join his big brother on the ice? You bet.
