Travis Hunter picks a position for NFL Combine, but could be a formality

Former University of Colorado star Travis Hunter has picked a position for the NFL Combine.
But maybe don’t read too much into.
The league released the list of college players invited to Indianapolis later this month and Hunter is slotted in as a defensive back. He played both ways at CU the last two years, and it culminated with Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy for his efforts during the 2024 season.
As a wide receiver, Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 and 15 touchdowns. As a cornerback, Hunter had four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and 36 tackles. In total, Hunter played an absurd 1,440 snaps for the Buffs this year, with 672 of those coming on offense and 688 on defense.
For the NFL Combine, Hunter had to be classified as a specific position group for the purpose of going through meetings and such. This doesn’t prevent him from staying in Indy longer and doing wide receiver drills if he so chooses, but there’s some doubt if Hunter will even workout at all or wait until his Pro Day in Boulder. He might also just do private workouts with a handful of teams.
Almost every mock draft has Hunter as a top-3 pick in the NFL Draft, with several forecasting the superstar to go No. 1 overall in late April. The Tennessee Titans currently hold that selection.
Regardless of where he lands, there’s a decent chance Hunter plays both ways at the professional level. That’ll be up to his new GM and head coach to decide, with Travis Hunter likely campaigning for the chance to play both cornerback and wide receiver, at least in some capacity.
The NFL Combine gets rolling on Feb. 27 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
