Avalanche sign goaltender Adam Scheel to one-year deal

Mar 4, 2025, 10:56 AM

The Colorado Avalanche agreed to terms on a contract with goaltender Adam Scheel that keeps him on the roster for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Scheel has spent his time up north with the Colorado Eagles this season, where he has been solid in net for the team.

In 11 games played with the Eagles this season, Scheel has posted an 8-1-2 record with a 0.911 save percentage, including back-to-back shutouts a month ago. The 25-year-old has spent time with the Texas Stars and Chicago Wolves previously in his career, both AHL teams affiliated to the NHL team in the respective city.

This move is a depth signing for the Avalanche, who have already made multiple moves with goaltenders earlier in the season when the club traded for Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood, to gear up for any possible injuries leading up to and in the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

While the Avs didn’t expand the “wood” family in the net with this signing, a trend many fans were noticing and enjoying, it never hurts to have more depth at the most important position in hockey. It is unlikely that Scheel will appear in the net for the team unless injuries start piling up, but as seen with the Avalanche in recent years, anything is possible when it comes to injuries.

Tonight, Scott Wedgewood should get the start in net for the Avalanche as the Pittsburgh Penguins come to town.
