Von Miller to be released by Bills … but don’t expect Broncos to bring him back

Von Miller will be looking for a new team.
The Super Bowl 50 MVP will be released by the Buffalo Bills after three seasons there, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday morning.
Bills are releasing pass rusher Von Miller, per sources. The release frees $8.4 million against the cap, but the team also is open to bringing him back.

The choice follows an eventful but ultimately frustrating three years for Miller in Buffalo that saw a torn anterior cruciate ligament on Thanksgiving of his first campaign there, allegations of domestic assault that resulted in no legal charges, but led to a four-game suspension for a violation of the NFL’s personal-conduct policy, a 2023 season in which he finished without a sack, and a bounce-back 2024 campaign in which he finished ninth in the NFL in pressure rate, per Pro Football Focus data, while working as a rotational pass-rush specialist.
Including playoffs, Miller had 11 sacks over 41 games with the Bills.
DON’T EXPECT THE BRONCOS TO HAVE INTEREST IN VON MILLER
While Von Miller has respect within the locker room — especially from players who were former teammates of his, such as left tackle Garett Bolles and edge rusher Jonathon Cooper — edge rusher is a position at which the Broncos are in excellent shape, both in quality on the first team and depth behind it.
Cooper and Nik Bonitto became the first pair of Broncos pass rushers to finish with double-digit sacks since Miller and Bradley Chubb did so in 2018. That was the only full season Miller and Chubb had together since Chubb missed 12 games in 2019 due to a torn ACL, Miller was out for all of 2020 because of a torn ankle tendon and then was traded midway through the 2021 season.
Behind Cooper and Bonitto are 2024 third-round pick Jonah Elliss and one of last season’s most pleasant surprises, Dondrea Tillman. The Broncos were happy with Elliss’ progress as a rookie, and both Tillman and Bonitto ranked in the NFL’s top 20 edge rushers (minimum 112 snaps) in both pressure rate and hit rate, per Pro Football Focus.
Still, Miller is “the GOAT,” Cooper said in January.
And while that may technically be a bit of hyperbole, Miller still remains on a collision course with the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and is the best pass rusher in Broncos history based on his work from 2011 through 2021.
But to bring him aboard would mean taking snaps from Elliss or Tillman, two players entering their second seasons with plenty of promise, and that doesn’t appear to be something the Broncos want to do — or that they should do.
Miller should have some interest around the NFL based on his ability to generate pressure in a limited role. But it would be a shock if that came from his original team.
