Amador and Romo both have been considered among the Rockies’ top prospects. But in recent months, their situations have diverged. And while Amador likely remains in the Rockies’ long-term plans, the outlook is more muddled for Romo.
That’s because of the team’s decision last year to give Hunter Goodman a look at catcher. This spring, he’s focused on catching full-time, and he’s been on a tear, notching a 368/.478/.526 line in 9 games and 19 at-bats. He appears poised to be the young part of the Rockies’ catching duo when it breaks camp for the regular-season opener at Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile, Romo struggled to get untracked this spring, posting a .118/.211/.176 line and a .387 OPS in 11 games and 17 at-bats. He posted a .443 OPS in 53 plate appearances over 16 games at the major-league level late last season.
As for Amador, he was enjoying a solid camp, notching a .296/.472/.333 line over 16 games and 27 at-bats. Amador’s potential was a reason why the Rockies chose to non-tender Brendan Rodgers last November. Colorado subsequently signed Kyle Farmer, who is nearly six years older and at age 34 is a bridge to Amador.
But the presence of Thairo Estrada — who has a .423/.429/.500 line while going 11-for-26 at the plate — laid the groundwork for the Rockies to be more patient with Amador. Colorado signed the 29-year-old veteran in January to a 1-year, $4-million deal with a team option.
Amador, Romo and Zac Veen were considered the three young position players who had the best chance to work their way into the lineup. Veen is the only one remaining in big-league camp; he has a .934 OPS entering Wednesday’s play.
