Former Broncos QB Russell Wilson has two visits scheduled, looking for new team

Mar 12, 2025, 2:43 PM

Former Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson is looking for his fourth NFL team in five years.

And on Wednesday, there was some surprising news about where Wilson could land.

He’s actually going to take visits to Cleveland and the New York Giants, per multiple reports. Wilson played last year with the Steelers, the two before that with the Broncos and in 2021 he played his final season with the Seahawks after spending his entire career in Seattle.

During Super Bowl week, NFL insider Jay Glazer said he didn’t except Wilson back with Pittsburgh, and that certainly appears like it’ll be the case.

Of course, the Broncos took on the largest dead salary cap in NFL history to cut Wilson last offseason. His one year in Denver in which he and head coach Sean Payton overlapped was clunky, including a sideline blowup from Payton on Wilson in Detroit.

The Broncos took on $53 million of the stunning $85 million dead cap hit this past year, and will still have $32 million on the books in 2025. But that’s the “punishment” Denver faces from the NFL, and Wilson is free to sign anywhere he pleases.

Right now, it appears that the Browns and Giants are at least doing their research on the potential future Hall of Famer. Those teams also have picks in the top-3 of April’s NFL Draft, so perhaps they would sign Wilson and have him compete with someone like Miami’s Cam Ward or Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders for a starting job?

Regardless, at 36-years-old Russell Wilson is holding on for his NFL life, at least as a No. 1 QB. He did throw for 16 touchdowns and five interceptions with the Steelers last year, and 26 TDs and eight picks with the Broncos the year before that, but his mobility (or lack thereof) has become an issue.

Wilson took 90 sacks in two years in Denver, which drove Payton crazy in 2023, then 33 sacks with Pittsburgh in only 11 games a season ago.

Now, QB desperate squads like the Browns and the Giants are the ones calling about his services. We’ll see how it all shakes out.
