Colorado Avalanche superstar Nathan MacKinnon is on the verge of doing something really special this season.
A new poll shows MacKinnon is likely to win back-to-back Hart Trophies, becoming the first player to repeat as NHL MVP since future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin did it in 2007-08 and 2008-09.
The NHL’s official site released a survey of 16 writers and editors on Friday, and MacKinnon received nine first-place votes. Overall, based on a points system, he’s comfortably ahead of Edmonton stud Leon Draisaitl and Winnipeg goalie Connor Hellebuyck.

MacKinnon is having another ridiculously good season coming of his first MVP last year. Through 66 games he has 27 goals and 75 assists, good for a league-leading 102 points. He also recently recorded the 1,000th point of his NHL career, becoming only the 100th ever player to reach that milestone.
Nathan MacKinnon has an active 20-game home point streak, including 17 points during the Avalanche’s eight-game home winning streak. And oh by the way, not that it matters for this voting, but he was also the MVP of the 4 Nations Face-Off last month.
Avalanche GM Chris MacFarland made a stunning nine trades this season, including dealing MacKinnon’s longtime friend and linemate Mikko Rantanen, but it hasn’t mattered. He’s shown he can play with anyone, elevating their games while also keeping his consistent.
Overall, Colorado has 81 points, good for third place in the Central Division. They’re trying to catch Dallas (86 points) for second, although Winnipeg (94 points) is almost assuredly out of reach for first.
Still without MacKinnon the Avs probably wouldn’t even be a playoff team. He’s that good, and now that MacFarland has added pieces like Brock Nelson, Charlie Coyle and Ryan Lindgren, plus stabilized the goaltending situation months back, Colorado is focused on the Stanley Cup.
And while another Hart Trophy would be awesome for Nathan MacKinnon, you can bet he cares about a second championship infinitely more.
