TAMPA, Fla. — Rockies Report, Game 2:
THE BOTTOM LINE: A series of defensive gems that included a diving Brenton Doyle catch in center field, two double plays, a pair of runners thrown out at home plate and a diving Ezequiel Tovar stab that led to a throw to nail a runner at first base, ultimately allowing the Rockies to escape another jam. Doyle also contributed a third-inning RBI single to put the Rockies in front.

STARTER’S REPORT: Antonio Senzatela allowed a parade of baserunners, but was backed up by the aforementioned splendid work in the field, allowing him to dance out of trouble. He lasted 78 pitches before being relieved with one out in the fifth inning, leaving Luis Peralta with runners on first and second after allowing consecutive one-out singles. Peralta had a balk and then loaded the bases with a walk, but escaped the jam with a strikeout and an fly ball that Doyle easily caught.
IT WAS DECIDED WHEN: Ezequiel Tovar and Michael Toglia teamed up on a 6-3 double play to escape the seventh inning unscathed. This came immediately after after Hunter Goodman beat Kameron Misner’s throw home for Colorado’s second run in the top of the seventh inning, doubling the Rockies’ lead.
That run proved crucial and allowed Colorado to successfully withstand Tampa Bay’s eighth-inning rally. Seth Halvorsen pitched 1 1/3 clean innings to record the save.
NUMBER TO NOTE: 0 — The number of earned runs allowed by Rockies starters in 10 1/3 innings of work in two starts this season.
1 — Players among the nine in the lineup for both games who have failed to reach base so far. Kris Bryant is 0-for-8 in the cleanup spot with three strikeouts.
ROCKIES UNIFORM: Black hat with purple bill, purple jersey, gray pants. The Rockies are 1-1 in this ensemble.
WHAT’S NEXT: Colorado closes the series Sunday with an 11:40 a.m. MDT first pitch. Ryan Feltner is scheduled to make his first start of the season with Taj Bradley pitching for the Rays.
