The Rockies are in line to utilize the new technology that is taking baseball by storm

The torpedo bat is taking over Major League Baseball as the 2025 season gets underway, headlined by the New York Yankees hitting 15 home runs in the first three games of the season (and only one of them was a unicorn home run hit to the short porch in Yankee Stadium). The Colorado rockies are reportedly next in line to try out baseball’s newest technology.

The torpedo bat redistributes the weight in the baseball bat to put more mass in the sweet spot of the barrel, making the bat look similar to a bowling pin. The bat has a barrel diameter of 2.61 inches, the maximum amount allowed by the MLB, while being at or under 42 inches long (the maximum allowed) and being round and smooth. This is a 100% legal way of making the bat more favorable to the hitter, unlike other methods seen in the past such as corking the bat.
The Rockies are currently one of just three teams that have only hit a single home run so far this season, so a change of bat could be for the better in terms of generating power. In 2024, the team was in the middle of the league in terms of home runs, despite playing in the hitter’s paradise known as Coors Field.
Kris Bryant was brought up as a player who could make the jump from a traditional bat to the torpedo bat whenever the Rockies’ order gets in. In eight at bats so far, Bryant has three strikeouts and hasn’t reached base a single time, a perfect representation of how his tenure with Colorado has gone so far. While the torpedo bat would help him generate power when hitting the ball, he first needs to make contact and get the ball in play for the bat to work.
The Rockies will not have the bats in time for Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, so changes won’t be seen right away, but they should be in soon for the club. For now, German Marquez will get his first start of the season against the Phillies on Monday as the Rockies look to rebound from a 6-4 loss to Tampa Bay on Sunday.
