ESPN says the Rockies don’t have a top-100 player in baseball

The Colorado Rockies don’t have a top-100 player in Major League Baseball.

At least, that’s what an ESPN story on Wednesday says.

They gathered more than 60 “baseball experts” to come up with the list, and created a unique formula to ultimately rank the best 100 players in the game.

“We presented a panel… with pairings upon pairings of the biggest names in the game and asked them which player will be better this season,” the ESPN story says.

And the result of that was no Ezequiel Tovar or Brenton Doyle, largely regarded as the Rockies’ two best players, cracking the top-100. The only two other teams in the sports without a representative were the Chicago White Sox and Washington Nationals.

Tovar and Doyle both won Gold Gloves in 2024, and Doyle earned one in 2023 as well. Tovar hit for a .269 average a season ago, launched 26 home runs and had 78 RBI. He finished 19th in NL MVP voting.

Meanwhile, Doyle hit .294 at the plate, accounted for 23 homes runs and 72 RBI. He also stole 30 bases, showing off his dazzling speed.

Are these snubs that neither made the top-100 list? Probably, yes. But the Rockies also don’t get any national attention, are generally regarded as one of the worst franchises in sports (not just baseball) and don’t do much to market either player. If Tovar or Doyle played for the Yankees or Dodgers, they’d probably be in the top-50.

On the field, 2025 isn’t off to a great start after back-to-back 100 losses seasons. Colorado has a 1-3 record and their bullpen has been a complete and total disaster, with the starting pitching a pleasant surprise thus far.

Either Tovar or Doyle will likely be the Rockies representative at the All-Star Game this summer, but that’s a small consolation prize in what could be another long year. And according to ESPN, neither is one of the best 100 players in the game.
