DENVER — The Colorado Rockies endured an opening seven games in which everything but their starting pitching went wrong.
But on their eighth day, something went right that hadn’t been seen for them in nearly 10 years — a triple play.
It happened in the top of the second inning. One pitch after a failed challenge on a play at first base that left runners at first and second with nobody out, Germán Márquez coaxed a ground ball from Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson — who chopped it to Ryan McMahon.
McMahon stepped on third base and quickly fired the ball to Kyle Farmer, who pivoted and rifled it to Michael Toglia at first base, going around the horn for a 5-4-3 end to the frame.

With that, Colorado had its first triple play since Sept. 1, 2015, when Arizona’s Paul Goldschmidt lined into a ninth-inning triple play at Coors Field.
It was the fifth double play in club history.
The moment seemed to ignite the team, as right fielder Sean Bouchard followed the rarity with a 2-run blast in the bottom of the second inning, putting Colorado in front 2-0. In the following inning, the Rockies got out of trouble with a double play of the 6-4-3 variety.
The Rockies’ 5-4-3 triple play in the second inning was their fifth in franchise history per @EliasSports. The previous triple plays were:
4/10/2003 vs. STL
4/29/2007 vs. ATL (unassisted)
5/18/2014 vs. SD
9/1/2015 vs. ARI— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) April 6, 2025
