Rockies’ opening weekend attendance showed a surprising trend

The Colorado Rockies wrapped up their home-opening series against the Athletics with a 12-5 victory at Coors Field on Sunday to get the club’s second victory of the season. Sunday was the warmest day of the weekend after fans stuck it out through the snow and cold weather conditions to see the Rockies lose on Friday and Saturday.
Opening weekend at Coors Field has always been a hot commodity, as the team has sold out every non-COVID home opener in franchise history. In 2022, the team sold at least 40,000 tickets to all three games when the Los Angeles Dodgers came to town to kick off the season. In 2023, the second and third games sold at least 30,000 tickets. In 2024, that number dropped to 25,000 for games two and three.
The 2025 opening weekend for the Rockies stopped that trend, however. The second and third games sold more than 26,000 tickets despite the adverse weather conditions. With all the calls from fans to stop attending games in hopes of sparking change amongst ownership, this weekend’s series showed that Coors Field will always sell tickets no matter what.
If fans are truly series about boycotting the team and not buying tickets to put more revenue in the owner’s pockets, what will it take for them to stop going to Coors Field? The Rockies have ranked in the top-half of the MLB in attendance in every single year since 2007 (fittingly enough, the best season in franchise history was one of the worst in terms of attendance), and as long as the tickets keep selling at Coors Field, no change will take place.
With the weather getting warmer, what will the ticket sales look like as the season goes on? The team has one of the worst records in the MLB and has no chance of winning the NL West once again. The weekday series in 2024 that followed opening weekend sold roughly 19,000 tickets per game. With a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers slated to start from Coors Field on Tuesday, the attendance numbers will show whether or not fans are serious about not attending games.
