Trent Sherfield will fit right in with a Denver Broncos team culture.

He takes pride in his blocking. He contributes on multiple phases of special teams. Wide receiver is the position under which he’s listed on the roster, but it doesn’t accurately describe the depth and breadth of his contributions to his previous teams — or what he’ll bring to the Broncos as he joins them on a 2-year, $8-million deal.

Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz was first to report the move.

In seven previous seasons, the 29-year-old Vanderbilt product has never started more than four games in a campaign, more has he caught more than the 30 passes he nabbed in 2022 for the Miami Dolphins. Last year for the Minnesota Vikings, he caught 8 passes for 83 yards and a touchdown, making 1 start.

But he played 221 special-teams snaps — nearly half of the plays in that phase. In his career, he’s played at least 150 special-teams snaps in six-consecutive seasons.

It was a role to which he learned to adapt, he told Purple Insider last season.

“I’m taking it more seriously, I’m more mature now,” Sherfield said in October. “If I’m being honest with you, I shied away from it earlier in my career because I wanted to show that I’m a receiver but it’s something I realized this year, man, I’m really good at this. It can be a valuable asset for a team.”

Sherfield will likely help replace Tremon Smith, the special-teams standout who agreed to terms with Houston on Monday. Smith prized his role and from all indications, Sherfield is poised to do the same.

“When you do the dirty work, the reward is going to come,” Sherfield told Purple Insider in October. “I just try to make sure that whatever I’m asked to do, I’m going to excel at it.”
