An unexpected player has been a lone bright spot for the Rockies offense

The Colorado Rockies have struggled to get the bats going so far in the 2025 MLB season. The days of the ‘Blake Street Bombers’ are long gone, as the team is currently last in the MLB in runs scored (10) and hits (32), while being in the bottom third of the league for many other hitting stats. Not to mention that the team doesn’t have a single top-100 player in the MLB.
Heading into the season, many were looking at Ezequiel Tovar or Brenton Doyle to lead the offense after the strong campaigns the two put up last season at the plate (not to mention the two Gold Gloves). Doyle has been fine, batting .250 through five games, while Tovar is hitting just .150. While the rest of the team has not been able to find any consistency at the plate, one Rockie has stepped up and made his presence felt.
Hunter Goodman is leading the team in hits (7), batting average (.368), home runs (2), RBIs (3) and OPS (.400). He also has accounted for 16 of the team’s 47 total bases and has recorded a hit in every single game.
Goodman’s jump is huge after batting .195 in the first two seasons of his career. He only played in 70 games a season ago, but none of his hitting numbers were flattering enough to expect a jump like this to start the season. His year three leap has been phenomenal so far, but is it just a quick hot streak? Or is this the new Hunter Goodman?
Back in 2010, Carlos Gonzalez had a big time leap in performance behind the plate in his third season, his first in which he played almost the entire year. His batting average jumped from .284 to .336, his WAR jumped from 1.7 to 5.8, and a plethora of other stats improved that year in comparison to his sophomore campaign. Goodman, similar to Cargo that year, is in his first year that he’s routinely in the starting lineup and getting plenty of opportunities at the plate. The problem is that the 2025 Rockies are a lot worse than the 2010 Rockies, and Goodman currently has no one else to help him at the plate.
Thanks to the lackluster hitting from the rest of the team, Colorado is already 2.5 games back of fourth place in the NL West, and 5.5 back of the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. No one expected the team to win the World Series this year, but the bats being this cold to start has been a surprise. The final game of the six-game road trip to open the season starts at 11:05 a.m. Denver time against the Phillies on Thursday before the team returns to Coors Field for a snowy home-opener against the Athletics on Friday.
