Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter met with the media at the NFL Combine on Thursday and made it clear he wants to play both ways at the professional level.
Even though Hunter was officially listed as a defensive back, he’s ready to be a wide receiver in the NFL as well.
“I’m going to play both,” Hunter told reporters.
At the University of Colorado this past season Hunter was spectacular at both positions, which led him to winning the top award in college football.
As a wide receiver, Hunter caught 96 passes for 1,258 and 15 touchdowns. As a cornerback, Hunter had four interceptions, 11 pass breakups and 36 tackles. In total, Hunter played an absurd 1,440 snaps for the Buffs, with 672 of those coming on offense and 688 on defense.
Still, Hunter knows it ultimately won’t be his decision where he plays, despite it being a desire to always be on the field.
“That’s not my job to figure it out. I like to play both sides of the ball. If they give me the opportunity to play both sides of the ball, I’m going to play both sides of the ball,” Hunter said.
Hunter could go as high as No. 1 overall to Tennessee, something he talked about as being important to him on Thursday. The Titans were a pathetic 3-14 a season ago, so they need all the help they can get. It’d be silly if they picked Hunter and cut his snaps in half.
“They say nobody has ever done it, for real, the way I do it, but I tell them I’m just different. I’m a different person,” Hunter said.
We’ll see how it all shakes out with the NFL Draft less than two months away, but Travis Hunter made his wishes clear. Hopefully, the GMs with the first few selections were paying attention.
